Very small things in life can have unexpected and accumulative effects. This is seldom more so than with our behavior. Subtle things influence the way others react to us. The way others react also tends to influence our self-view and much of our reality. For instance, something as simple as accepting a compliment.

Many people have the mistaken notion that accepting a compliment make them appear less than humble. Instead, hoping to sound modest, people often tend to “discount” the compliment. For example, “You wrote an excellent report.” Rather than, “Thank you,” the person may say, “Oh, it was just something I threw together.” In effect, the message is, I do not accept complements well or I do not value your opinion. In either case the result will likely be less positive statements in the future.

The same often occurs with business managers. Continually “discounting” praise may mistakenly be seen as the sign of a strong person. Nothing is further from the truth. In time, much fewer expressions of gratitude come. This often leads to feeling that others simply do not appreciate things. It may also make it more difficult to express gratitude. This is unfortunate and makes relationships far more difficult.

Compliments and gratitude are very positive. Learning to graciously accept them is as important as learning to sincerely express them.
