Many years ago, I had the privilege of listening to a man that had built quite a business. Coming from very little, he had amassed a fortune in a competitive industry. One thing he mentioned in his talk was what he called “one of the greatest business secrets.”
Like most great business secrets, it was simple common sense. Something everyone already knows, but only a few consistently do. The secret was, to answer every communication, every time. His secretary had a system that made certain he received every message. Every phone call was returned and every email answered. He seemed to think this was a matter of showing respect and I agree.
Over the years I have tried to follow this advice and it has paid quite handsomely. I have also become very sensitive to others who don’t.
Looking for very high quality air compressors, I found a website. Very well done, an expensive site. After reading I was very interested and hit the contact page to have a few questions answered. No reply! I spent over $20,000 with a company that did reply.
Hiring a contractor to epoxy coat my floors. I emailed two and one replied, guess who got the job.
Six new office computers. Two phone calls to a local vendor, no reply! I bought from another that did.
Setting up a company cruise for all employees and their wives. Two calls to a local travel agent, no reply. I booked with another that did.
Opportunity may knock for everyone, but in order to capitalize the knock has to be answered.

This one has amazed me for years. The issue for me has always been not whether we reply, but how fast we reply. Yet there seem to be countless companies who never reply at all!
How in the world do they stay in business?
The really scary thought is spending massive funds on marketing, then not acting when someone responds to it.
Woody Allen again...80% of life is just showing up.
