My favorite Fall vacation is to load up the car and drive. This year is no exception and Friday Elaine and I will head for points North. Old favorites and new surprises. I like to drive the US highways, not as quick as Interstates but far more interesting. I always look for Mom and Pop type eating places at which to stop. Not only is the food normally excellent, the conversation is excellent as well. I know of no better way to learn about a place.
I strike up a conversation, listen and learn. My favorite question is, “Who’s the best auto repair shop in the area.” I never remember hearing, "I don’t know." Rather, people seem very passionate about this topic, one way or the other. I have heard, “I don’t know who’s good, but let me tell you where not to go . . .” I have also heard many rave reviews. Both conversations teach me a lot about people and the things they feel make a shop great.
Occasionally someone is so emphatic about “their shop” that I really want to see for myself. I normally drive by, introduce myself and if the owner has time take a look around. Over the years I have met some really nice folks, learned a lot and gained several new ideas. This year, I hope will be the same. I will be out of touch for the next week, but hope to return with a great many new topics. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
