I have a series of questions concerning motivation.

Does setting goals or targets tend to motivate workers. What are the criteria under which goals contribute to motivation? What might cause goals to beome a de-motivator?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello Mike,

As an opener to your topic, research has found that goals and rewards:

1) Destroy enjoyment a person might have had in the task (like fixing cars) and focus them instead on the reward (flat rate, commission, etc),

2) Goals widen the distance between the person making the promise (manager) and the person trying to reach them (mechanic), therefore weakening a sense of teamwork,

3) People who work under a pay-for-performance plan, like flat rate, do lesser quality work than those that don't.

Louis can write a book on this.

You make good points.

Tell me more, maybe some examples if you will.

Thanks

Dr. Deming taught there are 4 areas of knowledge that are necessary to run a profitable business. One of those areas is psychology, an understanding of how people think. Louis has a reading list on that area too, and it is quite academic. While it will take some time and effort to plow through the texts, you will learn a lot from it.

I see goals as inherently neither good nor bad, as a brick can be used to build or smash a window. A person reaching a personal goal can help bring out their motivation. A business setting a goal that cannot be reached and providing limited [no] resources can be de-motivating.

Goals are not a substitute for management. As more often practiced, they are wishes, without a method or means and imposed on others. With a method, resources and means a goal will likely be met, with or without it being stated?
