Tim always had an interest in things mechanical. When he was very young he would disassemble things, just to see how they worked. Tinkering with his and friends vehicles, he was also quite often in the part store. This brought him to his first job. Ed, the store manager recognized this bright young man’s ability and hired him.

Tim caught on very quickly, but his real interest was in being a technician. Often Bob would come into the store. Bob had owned and operated a small auto repair shop for many years. Tim asked Bob for advice on becoming a technician. Bob’s advice was quick and stern. “Nothing but hard work, low pay and ingratitude, learn to do something else!” I’ve been at it for 40 years and have nothing but busted knuckles and a pile of bills.

Tim was astounded by Bob’s reply. To him auto repair had always held great interest. The thought of being well paid, doing something he liked was very appealing. But here was a person who had spent many years in the trade and his advice was stay away.

Tim went to Ed and asked him for advice. Ed introduced Tim to Joe. Joe had a totally different perspective. He told Tim how he had also always loved auto repair. He had started out as a helper, learned the trade and became a technician. Eventually Joe started his own business, and had done quite well. Joe’s enthusiasm could not be missed. It was clear he loved his career and obvious he was successful.

Tim once more went to Ed for advice. How could Bob and Joe both be talking about he same thing? Which one was right? Ed wisely answered, “They’re not talking about the same thing at all.” They are both telling you about themselves, they’re both right . . .
