Your advice please on holiday pay for a new employee. Young fellow started 12/3/07, worked 3 weeks before Christmas Eve. On Christmas day, carrying a snow blower for his father, it got away from him, and he hurt his dominant hand, tried to work a little on Wed., didn't accomplish much. Went to the Dr. Wed eve, may or may not have a fracture, Dr says to take 2 weeks off. Our policy states 90 days employment before eligible for holiday pay, so it should be cut and dried, but I'd always prefer to err on the side of generosity. I've gotten burned by that in the past though.
He's fairly green, and needs a lot of training also. I'd thought of paying him half pay for the time he's off, and having him come in and learn some of the equipment. He comes from a shop where an outdated Snap On scanner is their diagnostic arsenal, we have all OEM scan tools, quite a learning curve. I don't want to get in trouble telling him to work when the Dr says to take off, but I also know the 2 weeks off will create not only financial problems, but might set him stir crazy also.

Your thoughts are appreciated, thanks!
I have always tried to be guided by two things, with regard to paying employees.
1.) What I felt was right
2.) What the company could afford
and in that order.
I like your idea of allowing him to earn money while training. It seems you both would gain from such an arrangement. Simply checking with the physician before hand should save any problems with conflicts.
