Many small businesses do not give a lot of thought to advertising until things start to get a bit slow. This is in sharp contrast to big business, which tends to market and advertise heavily year round. Most people can see the wisdom of the big business approach, but simply cannot afford the expense.
I think a constant presence before the market is important. Keeping our name in front of our public, so to speak. This need not be prohibitively expensive. For instance, a business may produce a few very well done radio spots. Running them just three days a week can be effective, if they are run at the same time each day. People tend to be creatures of habit. They tend to listen to the same station at the same times each day. For example, morning drive, say 6AM till 8AM. Running three days a week at 7AM, may reach a certain group three times a week. That’s pretty good exposure. Obviously the more you can afford to run the better.
Another good piece of marking is a newsletter. Try to send at least every three months. The point is not waiting until you are slow to market. Rather keep your message before your public. You can also greatly increase the effectiveness of your marketing. Radio spots and newsletters should always give your web URL. The same with business cards and even employee uniforms. The website can mention the newsletter and even link to radio spots. By keeping your name out there, you may eliminate slow spots all together.

I once heard a fellow say that the busier a business is, the more they should advertise. The slower they are, the less they should advertise. His thoughts were that when you are busy, it means people are buying. When it is slow, they are not buying. So, advertise when they are buying. If they are not buying, why waste your money trying to get them in?

Hi Dave,
A local saying is, "Hunt ducks when the ducks are flying." Same thought I think.
