Some of the best managerial advice ever given me was to share my ideas and thoughts with others in writing. The best place to do that is on a public management forum like this one.
Simply putting ideas into writing, constructing the sentences and paragraphs, forces me to think them through until the ideas are clear in my own mind. Knowing other people will read and evaluate my written ideas also helps develop critical thinking skills. That is, it makes me find the best words to explain my ideas in ways other people can easily understand.
Many times, when constructing posts, new insight has hit me, forcing me to change my mind on matters. Therefore, the simple exercise of posting has helped me to become a better manager and to understand how other people might think too.
Aside from these benefits, having others question my ideas is actually quite helpful. If I cannot defend my position, perhaps I should reconsider my position? That simple act of debate is an excellent management tool and has been taught for thousands of years. Had internet management forums been around 35 years ago I would be a far better manager today.
In summary, I would encourage anyone interested in developing their management skills to try posting a few thoughts here. The benefits are the most you may ever receive for the effort spent. You will be pleasantly pleased.
