Look at WalMart's advertising. They are always slashing prices. It is believable, but cannot be true. If the prices are continually lowered, eventually the product would cost nothing.

Over the past few weeks I have noticed several major insurance companies ads all saying basically the thing. Our rates are the lowest, people that switched to us saved several hundred dollars.

Company A says they saved people $3xx.xx when they switched from company B and C. Company B claims the same thing, they saved people $3xx.xx when switching from A and C. Now company C is entering the ring saying they are less expensive than A and B by, you guessed it, $3xx.xx.

Seems to me that I should start with company A. Then every few months switch insurance companies and save $3xx.xx. Soon I can get insurance for free?!?.

Does advertising have to be true or just believable?

Hi Dave,

Laughing That's a good point. I have come to the point where I pay none of it any mind. Instead, I try to look at the offerings, pick the one I think [can ascertain] is the best and then pay what they ask. My Dad always said, "Sometimes the cheapest way out, is the most expensive way in."

Perhaps believable is the goal, more so than honest. It certainly appears that way to me. Most of our society seems to feel looking good is more important than being good, so I guess advertising may just reflect the public?
